The D3100’s affordable price does not mean it can’t keep pace with its pricier Nikon siblings. This less expensive model provides pro-quality images without requiring expert skills. With features such as Guide Mode, Scene Recognition System, and a built-in Nikon speedlight, the D3100 is always ready for any situation. The D3100 can automatically select best picture settings, or it can incorporate the photographer’s creative input. Users can begin at a novice level, letting the D3100’s Guide Mode provide instruction. In no time the novice will become an artist.

AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G lens with Vibration Reduction (VR) Lens

Fine optics are some of many products Nikon is famous for, and the 18-55 VR lens is no exception. The range of the lens is equivalent to 27-82.5 in 35mm. This provides a versatile range from wide-angle through mid-telephoto. The Vibration Reduction technology allows sharp images to be captured at speeds up to three stops slower.

    Guide Mode

Novice photographers moving up from lesser cameras need not feel intimidated by the D3200’s robust functionality. The Guide Mode walks users through simple and complex operations alike, such as photographing fast-moving objects or people, shooting in adverse light conditions, and close-ups.

    HD Video

Just as in still photography, the D3100 provides a range of video recording choices between fully automatic and manual control. 1080p, 720p, and smaller formats are available, and constant autofocus keeps video sharp. The built-in microphone is always ready, and the D3100 can be supplemented by an optional external stereo microphone. Connect the camera to an HDTV for instant playback, or use the D3100’s in-camera editing tools to make memorable movies.

    Active D-Lighting

High-contrast scenes are no longer hard to capture. The Active-D Lighting feature analyzes scenes and suggests camera settings so the captured image mirrors what the human eye sees. The feature can remain activated for constant assistance, or it can be deactivated for more creative control.

Nikon ViewNX 2 in-camera software editing tools

Still images and movies can be polished to perfection before they ever leave the camera. ViewNX 2 enables many of the editing functions previously done to files on a computer. Resizing, cropping, and re-touching effects, such as red-eye reduction and lightening or darkening a photo, can all be accomplished in-camera while using the D3100’s ViewNX 2 and outstanding 3” LCD.

    Built-in Flash

The pop-up flash works in either manual or automatic TTL modes. Fill flash based on matrix metering and standard flash based on spot metering both provide superior results. And while the built-in flash has the capability to handle most situations, the D3100 has a hot shoe mount for use with other Nikon flashes and speedlights for even greater photographic freedom.
