I made this image of 1999's
Academy Award Winner, James Coburn, in Los Angeles in 1981.
The image was made for part of the Jean-Paul Germain "Winners"
fashion campaign. Shot on Kodak Kodachrome 25 in a 35mm camera
affixed with a 105mm telephoto, it is an example of one-light
photography -- a 600-watt-second strobe bounced into a 32-inch
umbrella. The photograph was shot against a white background.
Its gray rendition is a consequence of two to two-and-half
stops of background underexposure (known as "falloff"). Exposure
was 1/60 second at f/4.0.
